A Response To The Eyeglass Rule

In June 2024, the FTC announced updates to its 10-year Eyeglass Rule, effective 60 days after publication in the Federal Register. These aim to boost compliance, requiring ophthalmologists and optometrists with financial interests in selling prescription eyewear to provide patients with a free copy of their prescription post refractive eye exams. They must also:

  • Obtain a signed statement from patients confirming they received their prescription.
  • Keep a record of the signed confirmation for at least 3 years.
  • Offer a digital prescription as an option, with the patient consent.

Consequently, Visionprescription.org, a non-profit organization, was established to reduce the administrative burden caused by the Eyeglass Rule and to strongly support the patient-provider relationship. Visionprescription.org is a free tool that enables eye-care professionals to comply with the Eyeglass Rule. The tool provides the following:

  • It maintains a record of the patient's prescription and documents the patient's acknowledgment of receipt.
  • It offers a method for validating prescriptions to reduce the need for validation calls to providers.
  • It empowers patients to select products and services based on value, while preserving the patient-provider relationship.
